Windows Phone 8 updates will end in July, 2014,according to a new post by Microsoft. However, users on Windows Phone 8 will get the option to upgrade to the next mobile operating system by the company when it is launched.
For Windows 7.8 users, the update cycle will end at September 2014. According to the post Microsoft wrote,
Microsoft will make updates available for the Operating System on your phone, including security updates, for a period of 18 months after the lifecycle start date. Distribution of the updates may be controlled by the mobile operator or the phone manufacturer from which you purchased your phone. Update availability will also vary by country, region, and hardware capabilities.
Effectively this means that Windows Phone 8′s life-cycle which began on December 2012 according to Microsoft will last a little over one and a half years.
Remember the roll out of the actual updates will depend on your original equipment manufacturer (OEM), the region you’re in and other factors.
Windows Phone 8 users get the option to upgrade to the next level of the OS which will probably be released this year. A tweet by the Windows Phone handle confirmed that upgrades would be possible:Also the Skype app for Window Phone 8 got a new update with People Hub integration and HD video support, reports TheVerge. The People Hub on Windows Phone allows of integration of contacts, their Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn etc. Skype had initially supported integration for the People hub but it was disabled due to stability issues. Windows Phone 8 users can now make direct Skype calls from the People Hub itself.
Of course the big question on everybody’s mind is when will Windows 9 come out. Will it help Microsoft gain some foothold in the smartphone/tablet industry? For now, neither Surface or any of the Windows 8 phones have set the world on fire.
